I’ve got a date with some baking soda and a wire brush tonight. Also, FYI the explosive bolt positive terminals on an E39 cost $400 for the OEM part alone...then you get to thread it the length the car through the trim into the engine compartment.

May have been too effective, bad battery + a tender means it’s constantly trying to reach a point if chemically can’t, accelerating the corrosion. More troubling is that the previous owner went for a battery that was the correct spec technically but the wrong size for an E39 M5. So there was cardboard folded to shim the battery in the enclosure.

Yeah, M5. The battery compartment is in the middle of the trunk since there’s no spare tire.
